SQL Server 2017 on LINUX FAQs – II – Microsoft

In this post we shall discuss few more questions and answers for SQL Server 2017 on Linux.

1. How to migrate existing databases in older versions of SQL Server from Windows to Linux?

Yes we can migrate your databases and data to SQL Server 2017 running on Linux. The method you choose to use depends on the source data and your specific scenario. The following sections provide best practices for various migration scenarios.

Migrate from SQL Server on Windows

If you want to migrate SQL Server databases on Windows to SQL Server 2017 on Linux, the recommended technique is to use SQL Server backup and restore.
1.Create a backup of the database on the Windows machine.
2.Transfer the backup file to the target SQL Server Linux machine.
3.Restore the backup on the Linux machine.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-migrate-restore-database?view=sql-server-linux-2017

It is also possible to export your database to a BACPAC file (a compressed file that contains your database schema and data). If you have a BACPAC file, you can transfer this file to your Linux machine and then import it to SQL Server.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-migrate-ssms?view=sql-server-linux-2017

Migrate from other database servers

You can migrate databases on other database systems to SQL Server 2017 on Linux. This includes Microsoft Access, DB2, MySQL, Oracle, and Sybase databases. In this scenario, use the SQL Server Management Assistant (SSMA) to automate the migration to SQL Server on Linux.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-migrate-ssma?view=sql-server-linux-2017

2. Is it possible to view Activity Monitor when connected through SSMS on Windows for an instance running on Linux?

Yes, you can use SSMS on Windows to connect remotely, and use tools/ features such as Activity Monitor commands on a Linux instance.

3. How do I get SQL Server installed on my Linux servers?

Microsoft maintains package repositories for installing SQL Server and supports installation via native package managers such as yum, zypper, and apt.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup?view=sql-server-linux-2017#platforms

4. Can I install SQL Server on the Linux Subsystem for Windows 10?

No. Linux running on Windows 10 is currently not a supported platform for SQL Server and related tools.

5.Can I download the installation packages to install SQL Server offline?

Yes. For more information, see the package download links in the Release notes. Also, review the instructions for offline installations.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-release-notes?view=sql-server-linux-2017
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup?view=sql-server-linux-2017#offline

6.Can I perform an unattended installation of SQL Server on Linux?

Yes. For a discussion of unattended installation, see Installation guidance for SQL Server on Linux.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup?view=sql-server-linux-2017#unattended

See the sample scripts for Red Hat, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Ubuntu. You can also review this sample script created by the SQL Server Customer Advisory Team.

Refer below tutorial-
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sample-unattended-install-redhat?view=sql-server-linux-2017
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sample-unattended-install-suse?view=sql-server-linux-2017
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sample-unattended-install-ubuntu?view=sql-server-linux-2017

7. Will SQL Server on Linux work on other platforms?

SQL Server is tested and supported on Linux for the previously listed distributions. Other Linux distributions are closely related and might be able to run SQL Server (for example, CentOS is closely related to Red Hat Enterprise Server). But if you choose to install SQL Server on an unsupported operating system, please review the Support policy section of the Technical support policy for Microsoft SQL Server to understand the support implications. Also note that some community-maintained Linux distributions do not have a formal way to receive support if the underlying operating system is the problem.

In the next post I shall provoide the Performance best practices and configuration guidelines for SQL Server on Linux.
