SQL Server 2017 on LINUX | Install sqlcmd and bcp the SQL Server command-line tools on Ubuntu

In this article we shall discuss about the installation of sqlcmd and bcp on Ubuntu 16.04.

The following steps install the command-line tools, Microsoft ODBC drivers, and their dependencies. The mssql-tools package contains following tools.

1. sqlcmd: Command-line query utility.
2. bcp: Bulk import-export utility.

Install tools on Ubuntu 16.04
We need to use the following steps to install the mssql-tools on Ubuntu.

Steps-

1. Import the public repository GPG keys.

	--

	curl https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc | sudo apt-key add -

	--

2. Register the Microsoft Ubuntu repository.

	--

	curl https://packages.microsoft.com/config/ubuntu/16.04/prod.list | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/msprod.list

	--

3. Update the sources list and run the installation command with the unixODBC developer package.

	--

	sudo apt-get update 
	sudo apt-get install mssql-tools unixodbc-dev

	--

4. Optional: Add /opt/mssql-tools/bin/ to your PATH environment variable in a bash shell.
To make sqlcmd/bcp accessible from the bash shell for login sessions, modify your PATH in the ~/.bash_profile file with the following command:

	--

	echo 'export PATH="$PATH:/opt/mssql-tools/bin"' >> ~/.bash_profile

	--

SQL Server 2017 on LINUX | Installing SQL Server on Ubuntu

In this article we shall discuss about the installation SQL Server 2017 on Ubuntu 16.04.

Note – To configure SQL Server on Ubuntu, run the following commands in a terminal to install the mssql-server package. If you have previously installed a CTP or RC release of SQL Server 2017, you must first remove the old repository before registering one of the GA repositories.

Steps-

1. Import the public repository GPG keys:

	--

	sudo wget -qO- https://packages.microsoft.com/keys/microsoft.asc | sudo apt-key add -

	--

2. Register the Microsoft SQL Server Ubuntu repository.

	--

	sudo add-apt-repository "$(wget -qO- https://packages.microsoft.com/config/ubuntu/16.04/mssql-server-2017.list)"

	--

3. Run the following commands to install SQL Server.

	--

	sudo apt-get update
	sudo apt-get install -y mssql-server

	--

4. After the package installation finishes, run mssql-conf setup and follow the prompts to set the SA password and choose your edition.

	--

	sudo /opt/mssql/bin/mssql-conf setup	

	--

Notes-

1. You can choose editions from Evaluation, Developer, and Express.
2. Specify a strong password for the SA account – Minimum length 8 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters, base 10 digits and/or non-alphanumeric symbols.

5. Once the configuration is done please verify that the service is running or not.

	--

	systemctl status mssql-server

	--

Note – If you plan to connect remotely, you might also need to open the SQL Server TCP port (default 1433) on your firewall.

SQL Server 2017 on LINUX | How to install SQL Operations Studio(SOS) on LINUX(Ubuntu)

First lets us understand What is Ubuntu and SQL operations studio? Ubuntu is a free and open source operating system and Linux distribution based on Debian.

SQL Operations Studio is a data management tool that enables working with SQL Server, Azure SQL DB and SQL DW from Windows, macOS and Linux. For more details please refer- https://msbiskills.com/2018/01/19/2017-new-data-management-tool-for-sql-server-sql-operations-studio/

In this post we shall check out the how to install SQL Operations Studio on Ubuntu.

Steps-

1. Open url – https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/sql-operations-studio/download?view=sql-server-2017

2. Go to – Get SQL Operations Studio (preview) for Linux -> Go to tar.gz Installation or find tar.gz Installation. Following code will be there.

3. Download SQL Operations Studio (preview) for Linux by using the tar.gz archive.

Download the SOS for Ubuntu

4.1 Go to terminal and execute the following command.

	--

	cd ~ 	

	--

4.2 Go to terminal and execute the following commands one by one.

	--

	cd ~ 
	cp ~/Downloads/sqlops-linux-<version string>.tar.gz ~ 
	tar -xvf ~/sqlops-linux-<version string>.tar.gz 
	echo 'export PATH="$PATH:~/sqlops-linux-x64"' >> ~/.bashrc
	source ~/.bashrc 

	--

4.3 Launch SQL Operations Studio using sqlops command via Terminal.

Sample Script

--

CREATE TABLE Test
(
    Id INT
)
GO

INSERT INTO Test VALUES (1),(2)
GO

SELECT * FROM Test
GO
