SELECT All in SSRS Parameters using DAX language

Today let’s talk about how to add Select All in parameters using DAX language. Recently we have a requirement where we need to add a “Select All” value apart from other values we were getting from cube using DAX language. This kind of ask is very common in SSRS reports. In SQL Server we can achieve this task very easily using Union All operator but in DAX it is quite difficult. So in our case a simple scalable solution came from Isha Mattoo. Before we jump on the solution directly let’s check out the example below-

Adding SelectAll in SSRS parameters using DAX

Now before doing union all operation lets first write a DAX query to get for account number. Check out the query below-

--

Evaluate
(
	CalculateTable
	(
		 Summarize ( InternetSales, Accounts[AccountNumber] ),
         Dates[Month] >= DateValue ( "2013-07-01 00:00:00" ),
		 Dates[Month] <= DateValue ( "2015-06-01 00:00:00" )
        )
)
ORDER BY [AccountNumber] DESC

--

In the above query we are fetching accounts for a particular period. Summarize will give us distinct account numbers and Calculate table is used to filter out values as where clause in SQL Server. Calculate table returns a data table.

Now lets add a Select All in the above query

--

Evaluate
(
	Summarize
	(
			 (
				AddColumns (
							 (

									CalculateTable
									(
										 Summarize ( InternetSales, ROLLUP ( Accounts[AccountNumber] ) ),
										 Dates[Month] >= DateValue ( "2013-07-01 00:00:00" ),
										 Dates[Month] <= DateValue ( "2015-06-01 00:00:00" )
								   )
							 ),
							"AccNumber", If (ISBlank ( [AccountNumber] ), "Select All", [AccountNumber] )
							)
				),
                [AccNumber]
   )
)
ORDER BY [AccNumber] DESC

--

Now lets check out the output

Output - Select All with other account Numbers - DAX

So the inner part of the query is very easy we are finding distinct account number with date filters using calculate table. In the outer part we have added all in the account numbers column and then we have a rollup in the inner section which will club the things together. After that we were just picking the alias [AccNumber]. DAX is bit difficult to understand but once you work with closely, you can easily win it.

I hope you have enjoyed the article. Thanks for reading !

DAX with Tabular Model Series | How to find multiple string in a tabular table using DAX?

Today let’s discuss how we can find multiple strings in a tabular model using DAX language. For this we need to use FIND function with CalculateTable or || with Filter. Well both filter and calculateTable are used like where clause in SQL Server. Now lets go through an example to discuss the same in more detail

--

EVALUATE
(
       CALCULATETABLE(
       SUMMARIZE
       (
                 InternetSales,
                 InternetSales[Types],
                 InternetSales[Description]
       ),
                 InternetSales[ClientId] = 124090
                 ,Month[Month] >= DateValue("01/01/2012")
		,Find ( "," & InternetSales[Description] & "," , ",Area Light,Cable Charges,Cable One Time   Chg,Charitable Donation,", 1, - 1 ) > - 1
       )
)

Pawan Khowal – DAX with Tabular Model Series – Find multiple string in a Tabular Table using DAX language

Ok so in the above example we are selecting types and description column from Internet Sales table. Please note that we are selecting distinct data only. Basically Summarize works like that. It will always gives distinct values. Calculate table is used to filter out things like where clause works in SQL Server. Here we have applied multiple filters.

Now point to be noted is how Filter function os used to find multiple strings from a single description column. Here we will get all the rows where column value matches with any of the value given in the string.

Now let’s consider one more query where we are finding multiple strings

--

EVALUATE
(
       SUMMARIZE(
              Calculatetable
              (
                        InternetSales
		        ,InternetSales[ClientKey] = 124090 ,
                        Month[Month] >= DateValue("01/01/2006") ,
                        FILTER
						(
							InternetSales,
							InternetSales[Description] ="Elec Adjustment" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Elec Off Peak" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Demand Off Peak" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Elec Partial Pk" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Dmd Partial Pk" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Garbage/yards" ||
							InternetSales[Description] ="Cust Chrg Water"
						)
              )
              ,InternetSales[Types]
	      ,InternetSales[Description]
       )
)

--

In the above query we are using Filter function with Or condition to find out multiple strings.

The second option of using Filter function with || condition to find out multiple strings is more efficient in terms of performance. It is more scalable and takes very less time to get the data.

DAX is somewhat different when it comes to understanding how the things are executed and the execution plan. I will try to cover things slowly so that people can understand DAX complexity easily.

DAX Parameter Replacer and Beautifier – Free Tool

Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) is a language introduced by Microsoft in Power Pivot and Analysis Services Tabular to define calculations and queries.

Download Free Tool – DAX Parameter Replacer and Beautifier

DAX Parameter Replacer and Beautifier is a free tool.

It majorly does 2 things-
1. It replaces all your parameters with their values.
2. It transform your DAX formulas into beautified code. Thanks to Nick Medveditskov for writing free web service (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/business_intelligence_labs/archive/2011/09/13/format-mdx-amp-dax-web-service-for-formatting-is-available.aspx )

We have created this utility to help developers works in Analysis Services with Tabular Model and reporting services. In our case we are working on Reporting Services and in the background we are using SSAS with Tabular model for data. To fetch data from Tabular cubes we are using DAX(Data Analysis Expressions). We have around 20-30 parameters per report and it is very difficult to replace values one by one manually and open a site for beautifying DAX ( for Readability purpose ). This utility will save your development time as you can easily replace your parameters ,beautify dax and copy the output very quickly and run on tabular model.

Sample Images of the utility are given below-

As always, I appreciate any comments or feedback.

Enjoy!

DAX with Tabular Model Series – Many to Many Relationship in Tabular Model, Achieve by DAX

Tabular model is completely different from Multidimensional in terms of storage, programming language or wait works and in the modeling part.

It is based on Relational Modeling. We have tables and relationships. In tabular model we can have one to one and one to many relationships. Analysis Services 2012 Tabular Model do not support many-to-many relationship in the native data model. However, We can achieve many-to-many relationship by writing a complex DAX expression.

In Multi dimensional model we have many to many relationship as a native relationship available in the model. We need to write complex DAX logic in order to achieve many to many relationship.

For calculations we are using calculated columns and defining measures !

I will post a Sample DAX example of how we can achieve many to many relationship via DAX in the next post

That’s all folks; I’ll see you soon with more “DAX” articles.

Thanks!

DAX with Tabular Model Series – What is a Context in DAX?

Context basically used to perform dynamic analysis, in which the results of a formula can change to reflect the current row selection and also any related data.

Understanding context and using context effectively are critical for building high-performing, dynamic analyses, and for troubleshooting problems in formulas.

Context is also called as Evaluation Context

There are following types of context-

  • Row context
  • Query context
  • Filter context

Filter context is the set of values allowed in each column, based on filter constraints that were applied to the row or that are defined by filter expressions within the formula. In simple terms you can consider filter context as a set of conditions in a WHERE clause of a SQL SELECT statement.

For example, check out a sample SQL statement and Equivalent DAX

SQL

--

SELECT ColorType
FROM Colors
WHERE ColorType <> -1

--

DAX

--

EVALUATE
(
	FILTER
	(
		VALUES('[Colors]'[ColorType]),
		ColorType <> -1
	)
)

--

Pawan Kumar Khowak - DAX with Tabular Model- II(Context)

Check out the picture above – DAX

Evaluate is the keyword from where we should start our query. Values clause is used to return distinct column values. It will simply discard the duplicate values and filter used in this query is used as a where clause used to filter out rows where ColorType <> -1. I will explain Row context and query context in the upcoming posts !

Summary

This is the small information about Context in DAX. I will some posts about how context works and row & query context.

That’s all folks; I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about Context in DAX, and I’ll see you soon with more “DAX” articles.

Thanks!
